Harvest Fest at Western Ghats with Native Tribes: A Celebration of Culture and Community

In a small hamlet called Gopanari, nestled amidst the enchanting Western Ghats, the Lions Clubs Coimbatore Stars, Native Medicare Charitable Trust, and District 324C came together to celebrate the Harvest festival, also known as Pongal. This special event, held on 07/JAN/2023, was a heartwarming celebration shared with the native tribal community, the Irulas. The festival not only involved the distribution of essential items but also brought together diverse dignitaries and local organizations, creating a memorable experience for all involved.
A Festive Gathering:
The Pongal festival was inaugurated by esteemed guests including DG PMJF S.Ramkumar, PMCC PMJF R.N.Karunanithi, Forest Ranger Mr.T.K.AshokKumar, Charter President Lion S.Sankara Narayanan, and DC for Tribals Lion N.Kamalakannan. As per the tribal customs, the dignitaries were welcomed with bouquets meticulously crafted from vibrant wildflowers. The air was filled with the rhythm of indigenous dance and music performed by the women and men of the community. Youngsters showcased their talent in martial arts, including the traditional Silambam.
Culinary Delights and Generosity:
The highlight of the festival was the cooking of Pongal, a delectable rice-based sweet dish prepared in earthen pots by the elderly women of the tribe. The aroma of the festive delicacies filled the air, and everyone was treated to a sumptuous feast that included Pongal, Vegetable Biryani, Curd Rice, and an array of sweets. Over 1000 tribals from nearby hamlets such as Velliyankadu, Thenkumaranada, Karamadai, and Barali gathered at Gopanari to partake in the festivities and enjoy the mouthwatering spread.
Community Collaboration:
The celebration of the Harvest festival received support and participation from other organizations as well. The Rotary Club of Coimbatore Akruthi and the Inner Wheel Club of Coimbatore West joined hands with Lions Clubs International, exemplifying the spirit of collaboration. This collective effort was in alignment with the vision of Lions Clubs International 3rd International Vice President A.P.Singh. The project incurred a total cost of 10,00,000 lakhs, demonstrating the commitment of all involved to make a positive impact in the lives of the tribal community.
A Vibrant Affair:
In anticipation of the Harvest Festival, Gopanari underwent a visual transformation. The entire village was painted red, symbolizing the festive spirit and creating an atmosphere of joy and excitement that resonated with the vibrant traditions of the Irula tribe.
